We believe in the potential of student athletes to make a difference - on the field, for their family, in their community.

A minor setback for a major comeback

An athlete being assessed for a sports injury

Time is of the essence, especially for injured student-athletes. When an injury occurs, delayed diagnosis can mean longer recovery, a missed season, and unnecessary worry for families. X-rays often do not tell the whole story, or provide enough detail to determine the next steps.

Our goal is to provide MRI scans or needed EKG's within 72 hours, ensuring a swift path to recovery and a quicker return to the field. Free of charge.

An MRI will give you a closer look at your injury, providing additional information so you can make smart choices about how to proceed.

How to know when a student-athlete needs an MRI:

  • A significant Injury occurs or severe pain that needs immediate evaluation. X-rays are unclear.
  • Persistent or Worsening Pain: Pain and symptoms that lasts beyond 1-2 weeks.
  • Suspected Soft Tissue Damage: Injuries to ligaments, muscles, tendons, or cartilage.
  • Functional Instability: Recurring joint instability, such as a knee giving out.
  • Mechanical Symptoms: Locking, clicking, or clicking in a joint.
  • MRIs are commonly used to diagnose sports injuries like sprains and strains.

Common Questions

Answers to what families, coaches and athletic trainers ask us most.

How do I get a free MRI for my student-athlete?

Call 888-480-9996 or email help@thecomebackproject.org. A member of our team will talk through the injury and arrange imaging, typically within 72 hours. You will not be asked for insurance information or payment of any kind.

What does it cost?

Nothing. The Comeback Project covers the full cost of the MRI or EKG. There is no insurance requirement, no copay, and no bill.

Who qualifies?

Student-athletes with a sports-related injury where imaging would clarify the diagnosis. We support athletes across Southern California, based in the Inland Empire.

How quickly can we be seen?

Our goal is to provide an MRI scan or EKG within 72 hours of your first contact with us.

When does a student-athlete actually need an MRI?

When an injury is significant or pain is severe, when X-rays come back unclear, when pain lasts beyond one to two weeks, when soft tissue damage is suspected, or when a joint locks, clicks or gives way.

Who runs The Comeback Project?

The Comeback Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit founded by Mark Segura and Shobi Zaidi, M.D., with board member Daylon McCutcheon, a former NFL cornerback and coach.
